B-24H Liberator Classy Chassis II, USAAF Serial No. 42-50291, was originally assigned to the 490th BG (Bombardment Group (Heavy)), 849th BS (Bombardment Squadron - Heavy) but was soon transferred to 486th BG, 832nd BS. Between the 4th June and the 9th July 1944 Classy Chassis II is believed to have carried out bombing missions from Sudbury airfield, West Suffolk, targeting airfields and coastal defenses in France before being sent for refurbishment to BAD 2 Warton, probably as the Squadron converted to the B-17G Flying Fortress in July 1944. This official US archive photo (Ref: 69971AC) depicts the aircraft at a base in England in March 1944 with Lt. Borman and Crew of the 849th BS.
